The stakes of today’s Derby Della Capitale were as high as ever before as Italian football fans witnessed one of the greatest Rome derbies in recent times. Goals from Tammy Abraham and Lorenzo Pellegrini helped Roma defeat Lazio 3-0 and overtake their cross-city rivals in the Serie A table. The Giallorossi took the bragging rights for winning the last Derby Della Capitale of the season and avoided losing both fixtures against Lazio for the first time since 2012.

The derby began in complete chaos as it took less than a minute for the home side to open the scoring. Pellegrini sent in a curling cross from a corner that nearly beat Lazio keeper Thomas Strakosha but hit the crossbar. However, the ball rebounded straight to an unmarked Abraham, and the Englishman redirected the ball into the back using his lap to stun the Olimpico.

Roma continued to control the game and to say that they were dominating would be an understatement. Mourinho’s side was beginning to play with the awareness, confidence, and composure that has been missing from their play in recent matches.

Around 15 minutes into the match, Lazio began to find space for the first time and had various glimpses of Sarri-Ball as they looked for an equalizer. The Biancoceleste were starting to settle down and continued to threaten Rui Patrício’s goal but Roma would strike again.

Rick Karsdrop would receive the ball on the right flank after overlapping Henrikh Mkhitaryan and whipped in a cross into the Lazio box that would be tapped in by Abraham to complete his brace.

It would take 38 minutes for Lazio’s first on-target attempt as Luis Alberto tried his luck from 20 yards out, but Patrício took care of it comfortably. With half-time approaching, Roma did not slow down as they won a free-kick from around 20 yards out. Pellegrini was expected to send in a cross into the box, but the captain struck the ball with nearly perfect precision and caught Strakosha off guard to increase Roma’s lead to three goals.

Lazio would press as soon as the second half began, and in the 50th minute, Ciro Immobile nearly got a goal back for his side but his shot was saved by a last-effort deflection from defender Roger Ibañez. Although Maurizio Sarri’s men were starting to show initiative, Roma’s backline kept the visitors at bay.

The Giallorossi would continue their hold over the game, and in the 67th minute, Abraham nearly completed the hat-trick. The 24-year-old found himself one-on-one with Stakosha but the Lazio keeper did well to come off his line and pressure Abraham, who fired his shot wide.

In the last ten minutes, Roma shifted their attention to maintaining their clean sheet, whereas the visitors continued to search for a consolation goal. Immobile would have the final chance of the match in the 83rd minute, but Patricio would once again deny the Italian.

The Olimpico erupted with cheers at the full-time whistle as Roma overtook Lazio in the standings to claim the league’s fifth spot. Sarri will be left wondering how his team played so poorly considering they had a week to prepare for the match as Roma won by three goals in the Derby della Capitale for the first time since 2016. Both clubs will return to action after the upcoming international break on April 3rd.
