Ciro Immobile is set to retire from the Italian national team following the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
The 32-year-old was the starting striker for Roberto Mancini’s squad in last night’s 1-0 loss to North Macedonia in the World Cup semi-final play-off. Despite leading the Serie A scoring race with Lazio, Immobile posed little threat to the Macedonia goal as Italy would lose yet another qualifier without finding the back of the net.
As per La Gazzetta dello Sport (via LazioNews24), Immobile will retire from international play following the loss to Macedonia.
His departure will leave Sassuolo duo Gianluca Scamacca and Giacomo Raspadori and Torino’s Andrea Belotti as the main options to play up front for Italy. It is unclear whether Immobile will be the only player to retire from international duty, but one could only expect more announcements in the coming weeks.
